Are your smoke alarms installed in Dead Zones?
The best place to install a smoke alarm is the highest point possible on the ceiling. However, wall installation is acceptable. No matter whether you install them on the wall or ceiling, it is important to avoid dead zones. These are areas where smoke from a fire will not reach until the fire is far advanced. The illustration below shows the dead zone or red zone. Avoid installing alarms in this area.
